Register a pet from outside NSW

My pet is from outside NSW. How do I register them?

If your pet was born and microchipped interstate or overseas, it was not recorded on the NSW Pet Registry. Now that you and your pet live in NSW, you must follow the steps below to register.

1. Create a NSW Pet Registry profile

Your Service NSW log in credentials grant you access to the NSW Pet Registry. If you don't have a MyServiceNSW Account, you will need to create one before you can access the NSW Pet Registry.

2. Gather documentation

Contact your local council to confirm what documentation they need to process an interstate or overseas pet registration.

3. Verify your pet's microchip number

Ask an authorised identifier such as a vet to verify your pet’s microchip number. They will record it on a Verification of existing microchip (M1) (PDF, 152 KB) form.

4. Give council your paperwork

Give the completed M1 form to your local council for processing, along with relevant documentation as proof of ownership. This will include:

  • a desexing certificate, if applicable
  • a statutory declaration outlining the circumstances of the sale or proof of ownership.

A statutory declaration must include:

  • your name and address
  • the details of how you came to own the pet, which you are declaring to be true
  • your pet's microchip number
  • your signature and the signature of an authorised witness (this can be a Justice of the Peace (JP), a legal practitioner or a notary public)
  • the date and location where the declaration was made.

Once this information is processed, log in to the NSW Pet Registry and your pet’s details will appear on your profile. If this doesn’t happen automatically, contact the NSW Pet Registry Helpline or your local council.
